Simone De Kleermaeker, Deltares

Forecasting to inform decision making

Ever wondered how a forecast can be best used to provide meaningful early warning? In this course we will explore how operational data and real time models can help decision makers on all levels to make better informed decisions. We’ll look at what it means to make timely, personalized and actionable warnings, as well as the data and models that form the basis for these messages. There will be many Australian examples to draw inspiration from, on applications like flood early warning, dam management, river operations and hydro power optimization.

As a mathematician, Simone has over 20 years’ experience with water related topics, working for the Dutch not-for-profit knowledge institute Deltares. The last 10 years, her focus has been on Flood Early Warning Systems all around the globe. In addition, she has a passion for innovation, training and sharing of knowledge with the Oceania water sector, Qld Flood Community of Practice and beyond. Since 2015 she has been based in Brisbane, where she has enriched her Dutch approach with some Australian flair. Simone cycles everywhere as practicable to minimise her carbon footprint and is also a creative dress designer.

Robbi Bishop-Taylor (he/him), Coastal Earth Observation Scientist, Geoscience Australia

Exploring petabytes of coastal data with Digital Earth Australia – from the comfort of your internet browser!

This Express Course will provide a brief introduction to exploring and analysing petabytes of freely available coastal datasets and satellite imagery using the Digital Earth Australia datacube. The Course will cover how to use the interactive DEA Maps platform to browse, compare and download information about Australia’s changing coasts, and introduce the DEA Sandbox learning and analysis environment for processing satellite imagery and coastal data in the cloud.

Dr Robbi Bishop-Taylor is a Coastal Earth Observation Scientist in the Digital Earth Australia Program at Geoscience Australia. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Geospatial Science for research mapping multidecadal surface water dynamics using satellite imagery. At Geoscience Australia, Robbi works as part of an interdisciplinary team responsible for developing the first continent-wide maps of Australia’s vast intertidal zone, and the recently released Digital Earth Australia Coastlines dataset that maps Australia’s dynamic coastline using three decades of satellite imagery.
